Tutton's salts(all are ratio of saturated solution mass, not solid mass or molar ratio)
Zn:Co=9:1 is a nice pale red, different from the pink color of Mn2+, and extremely clear and well-formed.
Ni:Co 9:1 Co3+-like cyan 8:2 dark green 7:3 nearly black. Such crystals show strong dichroism and also have different color in different directions. Diluting with Zn to Zn:Ni:Co=30:7:3 gives excellent crystals.
Crystals containing Ni2+ are opaque, which depends on the concentration of Ni2+. At 50% still serious, 25% relatively acceptable and at 17.5%(see above) nearly negligible. Reason unknown. Ni2+ is symmetric(d8) but much smaller than Zn2+.
Huge crystals of (NH4)3[VO2(C2O4)2].2H2O was grown, which is in fact very easy as long as saturated solution and seeds are obtained.
Under protection Cr powder dissolves in H2SO4, yet no solid product was isolated. Addition of EtOH gives much powder of CrSO4.5H2O, light blue, yet oxidized very quickly into green stuff soluble in EtOH. Washing with EtOH seems to destroy the crystal structure and promote oxidation.
Fe2+ reacts with KOH to form Fe(OH)2 which is oxidized quickly, but not completely. Add H2O2 to promote full oxidation. Such Fe(OH)3 obtained is highly reactive.
K3[Fe(C2O4)3].3H2O is obtained by boiling Fe(OH)3, KHC2O4 and little excess of H2C2O4. Green, solubility quite low(~15g/100mL), shape similar to K3[Fe(CN)6], though not closely related. Somewhat photosensitive, but very stable towards heat.
Al3+ reacts with K2CO3 to from Al(OH)3, adding Al3+ to carbonate and subsequent boiling seems to give better product. Such product is highly reactive.
K3[Al(C2O4)3].3H2O is obtained as above. Solubility somewhat larger and tends to be supersaturated. Shape unknown but quite irregular.
The damn novel is nearly done. A new part is added. Sad...
Novels can be printed as websites now.
And, I found her.
What's more?
Oxalate complexes of Cr3+ and Co3+ should be explored, as well as ways to change crystal shape of Al3+ complex.
Ways to make Mn3+ Fe3+ and Co3+ doped alums should be explored.
Tutton's salt of Fe2+ should be made.
